Between 1956 and 1963, ceramics artist Leo Tykkyläinen made approximately 15,000 Moomin figurines of ten different Moomin characters in his workshop. There are several color variations for each character, and the size of the figurines varies slightly. Every figurine is unique. Leo Tykkyläinen was a ceramics artist, famous for making Moomin figurines to be sold in the Stockmann department store in Helsinki from the late 1950s to the early 60s. In 1964 Tykkyläinen started working at Arabia's factory, and the manufacturing rights of the figurines were transferred to Arabia at the same time.

Leo Tykkyläinen was a ceramics artist, famous for making Moomin figurines to be sold in the Stockmann department store in Helsinki from the late 1950s to the early 60s. Between 1956 and 1963, ceramics artist Leo Tykkyläinen made approximately 15,000 Moomin figurines of ten different Moomin characters in his workshop in Maunula, Helsinki. In 1964 Tykkyläinen started working at Arabia's factory, and the manufacturing rights of the figurines were transferred to Arabia at the same time.

He is settled in Moominvalley and enjoys the quiet life, but still remembers his days of wild adventure. Moominpappa loves the sea and considers himself a great sailor and a fisherman. He uses a cane, and is hardly ever seen without his top hat. Moominpappa first appeared in Tove Jansson’s book The Moomins and the Great Flood.
